Stopping down a little to f/3.2 should help a lot. 70-200 FL is rather weak at close focus distance. It is optimised for mid to far distance. 300 PF is optimised for close to mid distance, it is weaker at far distance. The F2.8 70-200mm FL is tack sharp at every focal length. Many times these lenses perform noticeably better at certain focal lengths…the new version just goes to town across the entire zoom range.
